ABSTRACT

This article is an attempt to provide content analysis results of the relationship between the state-led patriotic education campaign and the cyber-nationalism which emerged in China in the 1990's. I examine the public directives issued by Chinese Communist Party and government to impose a 'patriotic education' campaign. I also examine the texts of the courses which all Chinese college students are required to take. Their results show that the public directives are well reflected in the contents of those texts and that college students being brain-washed by the patriotic education become facilitators for excessive nationalism in the Chinese cyberspace. It appears that the dependence on patriotism to build support for the Communist party government and the patriotic education campaign have a direct impact on the strong nationalistic sentiment of the Chinese college students who are leading the public opinion in the cyberspace.
