ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore and derive design guidelines based on literature research and user experience for an interior environment that minimizes the potential for physical harm to self and others and promotes patient-centered recovery in a pre-suggested seclusion module. Method: First, literature research design is applied by deriving design considerations based on prior research on the interior environmental design elements of the seclusion module. Second, user experience design is applied by creating personas based on the information collected from users. A design guideline for the seclusion module is proposed by reflecting both evidence-based design and user experience design. Results: The study proposes interior environment design guidelines for finish(ceiling, wall, floor), opening(door, window, observation window), facility(sanitation, temperature, ventilation), furniture and equipment(furniture, lighting, CCTV, equipment), and others(atmosphere, noise). Implications: It is essential to enhance research on the architecture and environment of psychiatric hospitals and seclusion rooms in Korea. Most of the referenced literature of this study relied on foreign sources. It is essential to establish data suited to Korea's conditions to prevent designs that fail to reflect the behavioral characteristics of psychiatric patients due to the lack of data and information in the field.
