ABSTRACT

Yun Yeong-ryeol was one of the most famous officials and military officersduringtheKoreanEmpire.Hewasofnoblebirth. Afterthe Sino-Japanese Warthere were so many gangs ofbandits in Korea.Theyattackedyangbans,peddlers,shopkeepersandplunderedlocal villages.Even though they disguised theDonghak Peasants Army orthe Righteous Army, Korean Governmentthoughtmostofthem were really banditswhoplunderedlocalpeopleoftheirpropertyanddisturbedtheorder ofsociety.Whatthey did wasattacking,harrassingmerchants,peasants,yangbansandwomen in thelocalarea.Sometimestheypillagedyangbans'tombsofgravegoodsandtradedtheirancestor'sremains. Anseongwasaveryfamouscountyforbusinessandgoodsin traditional societyofGyeonggiProvincein Korea.Itwasalsoaveryimportanttraffic area ofGyeonggiProvince nearSeoul.This surroundings made Anseong attractiveandcream areatothebanditsandgangsters.Sino-JapaneseWar and weak governmentofKorea letthem active in thelocalarea.People couldn't survive bandits' attack and plunder. They asked government removethegangstersfrom Anseong. Yun Yeongryeol worked 7 years as the Anseonggunsu (Anseong Magistrate) and commander for suppression of bandits of 3 provinces includingChungcheong and GyeonggiProvince.Hedid goodjob and was heartily praised by the local people. People raised stone or wooden monuments formemory ofhis good government.There remains 4 ston monumentsforthememoryofhim in thecentralpark ofAnseongCity.It wasnottheresultofmisgovernmentandharasstothepeople,butthereal goodgovernmentandsacrificeofhimselfduringtheturbulenttimesoflate 19thcenturyandearly20thcentury.
