AB - There were some signal-fire stations were on the seaside in the East Coastal area during the Joseon Dynasty, and they are called coastal signal-fire stations. There were 6 coastal signal-fire stations in region of Gangneung according to records. These are the list the names of these signal-fire stations from south to north, such are Eodalsan Bongsoo, Ogeubsan Bongsoo, Haeryeongsan Bongsoo, Sodongsan Bongsoo, Sahwasan Bongsoo and Jumunsan Bongsoo.
However, excluding Eodalsan Bongsoo, there has been a controversy over the locations of 5 of these signal-fire stations. So through this paper, the author attempted to locate the places of these 5 signal-fire stations, and find out their common characteristics. To this end, the author critically analyzed bibliographic data, investigated the sites of the signal-fire stations, and determined the controversial locations of the coastal signal-fire stations. As a result, it was possible to determine the locations of the coastal signal-fire stations in Gangneung. That is, these coastal signal-fire stations were located in the promontories on the seashore or in the mountains off the coast, and most of them were at a visible distance from adjacent signal-fire stations.
Also, the fact that some of the frontline guard posts of the Goryeo Dynasty, ‘Soo (戍),’ used the same names and their locations confirmed that they were used as the sites of signal-fire stations during the Joseon Dynasty.
This paper confirmed the location of the coastal signal-fire stations in Gangneung, and thus determined the locations of coastal signal-fire stations in the Yeongdong area.
