ABSTRACT

In the late Joseon Dynasty, Namwon(南原) was a strategic inland military location. Since ancient times, it has received attention as an ancient government facility due to its geographical conditions, and Gyoryongsanseong Fortress(蛟龍山城) was rebuilt several times in the late Joseon Dynasty. This paper is intended to examine military organization, scale, and practical aspects from a military history perspective regarding the construction and operation of Gyoryongsanseong Fortress. Afterwards, due to the national defense crisis, the fortress was massively rebuilt twice during the reign of King Sukjong(肅宗), and Suseongjang(守城將) served as a local governor(守令) and the fortress was considered a base for regional defense. Looking at the military organization of Gyoryongsanseong Fortress(蛟龍山城) in the 18th century, the Fortress had about 1, 000 soldiers, but its character was Sogogun(束伍軍). The Sogogun(束伍軍) of Gyoryongsanseong Fortress(蛟龍山城) was a Nappogun (納布軍), not a soldier engaged in actual military service. It was a source of finance for the maintenance of the fortress.
