KW - In the late Joseon Dynasty;Namwon(南原) was a strategic inland military location. Since ancient times;it has received attention as an ancient government facility due to its geographical conditions;and Gyoryongsanseong Fortress(蛟龍山城) was rebuilt several times in the late Joseon Dynasty. This paper is intended to examine military organization;scale;and practical aspects from a military history perspective regarding the construction and operation of Gyoryongsanseong Fortress. Afterwards;due to the national defense crisis;the fortress was massively rebuilt twice during the reign of King Sukjong(肅宗);and Suseongjang(守城將) served as a local governor(守令) and the fortress was considered a base for regional defense. Looking at the military organization of Gyoryongsanseong Fortress(蛟龍山城) in the 18th century;the Fortress had about 1;000 soldiers;but its character was Sogogun(束伍軍). The Sogogun(束伍軍) of Gyoryongsanseong Fortress(蛟龍山城) was a Nappogun (納布軍);not a soldier engaged in actual military service. It was a source of finance for the maintenance of the fortress.
