ABSTRACT

This paper aims to examine how the Bulanggi cannon(佛狼機砲 : Frankish gun) was introduced to Joseon and how it was built and deployed. The Frankish gun was a modern European artillery piece that was introduced to China in the 16th century. It was also introduced to Joseon through the Ming army during the Imjin War. Bulanggi cannons were known to have played an important role in the Battle of Pyongyang, and Joseon began manufacturing them soon after. By the mid-19th century, they were the main guns of the Joseon army. Bulanggi cannons are an important part of late Joseon military history, but there are virtually no full-scale studies on them. This is not to say that there hasn't been interest in them, and they have been mentioned in several papers. However, most of them dealt with the firearms of the Imjin War, but only in a fragmentary way, and did not specifically shed light on the Bulanggi. In this article, we will examine the manufacturing and deployment process of Bulanggi cannons in the 17th and 18th centuries. The 17th and 18th centuries were the period when Bulanggi cannons were mainly made in Joseon. I hope this paper will help to broaden our understanding of late Joseon military history.
