ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes the institutional sources of combat effectiveness of the French UN Battalion (BF/ONU) in the Korean War (1950–1953). Prior scholarship attributed BF/ONU’s performance to General Monclar’s leadership and volunteer morale, yet why these soldiers chose bayonet charges over surrender when surrounded has remained unexamined. Taking as its point of departure a sergeant’s testimony at Twin Tunnels (1951)—“there was nothing left but to do Camerone”—the paper analyzes four dimensions: the three constituent elements of ‘Camerone’ (the 1863 code of conduct, the identity of ‘Legio patria nostra,’ and accumulated combat proficiency); the transmission pathway through Monclar as Inspector of the Foreign Legion (1948–1950); the transmission mechanism anchored in volunteer-based formation and 13 former legionnaires of the 3rd Company as a condensation point; and the recurrence of Camerone across four battles: Wonju, Twin Tunnels, Chipyong-ni, and Heartbreak Ridge. The research draws on SHD archival sources, Monclar’s Catéchisme du combat (2002), and oral interviews (June 2026) with the President of the Amicale des Légionnaires d’Origine Coréenne and Roland Monclar, son of General Monclar. The analysis concludes that BF/ONU’s combat effectiveness reflects not a general French military tradition but the manifestation of Camerone accumulated since 1863—a living code repeatedly activated across four battlefields. The paper’s contribution lies in deriving its framework from the soldiers’ own language and modeling transmission through three channels (self-selection, structure, command) and the condensation point–activator model.
