ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the effects of acculturative stress on school performance of mid-career immigrant adolescents through the continuous multimodal mediation of social support and self-esteem. For this purpose, data from 164 mid-immigrant adolescents who participated in the second year of the Multicultural Youth Panel Survey were utilized and analyzed. The results showed that, first, acculturation stress significantly influenced school adjustment; second, acculturation stress significantly influenced school adjustment through social support; and third, acculturation stress significantly influenced school adjustment relationships. Third, acculturative stress had no significant effect on the school adjustment relationship through self-esteem. Fourth, acculturative stress did not have a significant effect on school adjustment through social support and self-esteem, but there was an individual mediation effect. Based on the findings of this study, the authors discussed the interventions to support the school adjustment of immigrant adolescents and made practical and policy suggestions.
