ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the effects of maternal gatekeeping behaviors—categorized as gate-opening (supportive) and gate-closing (restrictive)—on children's happiness, mediated by fathers' parenting involvement. To achieve this, a survey was conducted with 250 parents of children aged 3–5 residing in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0, employing descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediation analysis. The findings indicate that maternal gate-opening behaviors significantly increase fathers' parenting involvement, whereas gate-closing behaviors hinder it. Furthermore, fathers' parenting involvement positively affects children's happiness, confirming that maternal gatekeeping indirectly influences children's happiness through fathers' participation. This study underscores the importance of cooperative parenting and recommends the development of parent education programs and policy support. Specifically, programs aimed at reducing gate-closing behaviors and enhancing gate-opening behaviors in mothers are suggested, along with the implementation of flexible work arrangements and parental leave policies to encourage fathers' active involvement. These measures are expected to improve parental interaction, foster children's emotional development, and enhance overall well-being.
