ABSTRACT

This study aims to derive commonalities and differences by investigating and comparatively analyzing the Feng Shui characteristics of the location of the Bulnoe Sari Pagoda at Bongjeongam. The true Buddha Relics are not only highly symbolic but also irreplaceable. Venerating relics is essential to Buddhist practice, as the Buddha represents the pinnacle of Buddhism, and his relics are regarded as equivalent to the Buddha himself. The places where the people conduct ritual ceremonies toward Buddha relics are located at Hyeolcheo rather than enshrinement spots. It means that although the Buddha as an absolute entity should be enshrined at the Hyeolcheo, practical constraints made desires of people absolute requirements. Consequently, in the case of the Buddha’s Enshrinement Sites, Bajeons are located at Hyeolcheo and in auspicious sites based on Feng Shui. It means that when it is impossible to enshrine the Buddha himself directly people made the Buddha Relics which they really revere enshrined at the most auspicious spot of the temple, called Hyeolcheo, depending on Feng Shui, in order to achieve Buddhism through the relics and their religion praying for blessings.
