ABSTRACT

This study examined the sequential mediating effects of self-esteem and social support on the relationship between bicultural acceptance attitudes and life satisfaction among immigrant adolescents. Data from 137 immigrant adolescents who participated in the 5th year of the 2nd Multicultural Adolescent Panel Survey were analyzed for this research. The main findings are as follows. First, bicultural acceptance attitudes did not directly influence life satisfaction. While this contradicts some previous research, the possibility of indirect effects remains. Second, self-esteem was found to partially mediate the relationship between bicultural acceptance attitudes and life satisfaction. Third, social support was also confirmed to partially mediate the relationship between bicultural acceptance attitudes and life satisfaction. Fourth, the dual mediating effect of self-esteem and social support was verified. Based on these findings, the following policy recommendations are proposed. First, customized programs to promote positive bicultural acceptance among immigrant adolescents are needed. Currently, most programs are designed for children of international marriages, necessitating specialized support for immigrant adolescents. Second, measures to enhance self-esteem should be developed. Third, programs and social networks that bring together local residents and immigrant adolescents should be established. This study is significant in confirming the need for systematic support for bicultural acceptance attitudes, self-esteem, and social support to improve life satisfaction among immigrant adolescents.
