ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to validate the Suicidal Ideation Scale of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CESD-SIS) to facilitate the identification of individuals at high risk for suicide and enable timely crisis intervention. A total 250 adults in their 20s to 50s, were randomly selected from across the country, and the data was collected through self-report questionnaires. The results of the study are as follows. First, confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good model fit, with CFI = 0.942 and NFI = 0.939. Second, significant positive correlations were found between the CESD-SIS and both the MINI-SSR and BSI, supporting the criterion validity of the CESD-SIS. Additionally, significant positive correlations between the CESD-SIS and the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 supported its concurrent validity. Third, the cutoff score for identifying high-risk individuals was determined to be 6.5, based on ROC curve analysis, the J-index, and the Jacobson and Truax method. These findings suggest that the CESD-SIS is a valid and effective tool for quickly identifying and intervening with individuals at high risk for suicide in counsling and clinical settings.
