ABSTRACT

This study focused on the phenomenon of social relational exclusion, which threatens the quality of life of older adults in a super-aged society, and empirically examined the mediating role that leisure activities play in this relationship. The results revealed that, first, social relational exclusion negatively impacts quality of life. Second, leisure activities were identified as a factor that positively influences quality of life. Third, the mediating effect of leisure activities on the relationship between social relational exclusion and quality of life was verified. In conclusion, this study empirically confirmed the negative impact of social relational exclusion on the quality of life of older adults and demonstrated that leisure activities play a buffering mediating role in this process. This suggests that expanding and ensuring accessibility to leisure activities is essential to alleviate social relational exclusion and improve quality of life. This study has limitations as it only included older adults in Seoul and its self-reporting method poses a potential source of bias. Future nationwide longitudinal studies are needed to further examine the relationship between the three variables and to strengthen community-based leisure programs and social networks.
