ABSTRACT

This study aimed to identify the trajectory of life satisfaction and its influencing factors among the elderly using six years (2018-2024) of longitudinal data from the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS). A Mixed-Effects Model was employed to simultaneously analyze within-individual changes and between-individual differences. The analysis revealed that social participation (β=0.172) and the presence of a spouse (β=0.134) were significant positive factors that enhanced life satisfaction. Conversely, welfare service experience (β=-0.074) and a specific gender (β=-0.065) were identified as significant negative factors. Meanwhile, the passage of time and age itself did not have a significant effect when other variables were controlled. Furthermore, the random effects analysis confirmed substantial individual heterogeneity in both the initial levels and the rates of change in life satisfaction over time. These findings empirically demonstrate the marked heterogeneity within the elderly population, strongly suggesting that future welfare policies for the elderly should shift from uniform support to personalized, participation-based models that consider individual characteristics and social relationships.
