ABSTRACT

This study examined the effects of public pension benefits on life satisfaction among elderly recipients of the National Pension in Korea, focusing on the dual mediating effects of benefit satisfaction and psychological well-being. The analysis utilized data from the 9th wave of the Korean Retirement and Income Study (KReIS), including 1,398 individuals aged 65 and older who were receiving National Pension benefits. Regression analysis controlling for demographic variables revealed that pension benefit amounts positively influenced both benefit satisfaction and life satisfaction. In turn, benefit satisfaction had a significant positive impact on psychological well-being and life satisfaction. Psychological well-being also significantly contributed to life satisfaction. However, pension benefits did not directly affect psychological well-being. These findings confirm an indirect pathway: pension amount → benefit satisfaction → psychological well-being → life satisfaction. The study highlights the importance of considering not just the monetary value of pensions but also the recipient's subjective satisfaction and psychological health in policy design. It further suggests the need for differentiated policies that reflect individual circumstances and aim to enhance both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation based on self-determination theory. This research offers practical implications for improving the quality of life among older adults in a super-aged society.
