ABSTRACT

In order to provide welfare services that reflect the actual needs of the local disabled, the newly establihed welfare center for the disabled in Unjeong New Town, Paju-su, this study was conducted to directly collect and analyze the woices of the disabled and their guardians in the community. The research involved in-depth interviews with a total of 18 individuals. The research method employed qualitative case studies, with both within-case and between-case studies examining welfare needs by disability type. As a result of the analysis, five categories were derived ‘difficulties in daily life and social relations’, ‘restrictions on access to information and services’, ‘limits of social awareness and independence’, ‘family care burden and health management’, and ‘expectations and needs of welfare centers for the disabled’, There are 15 subcategories and 30 concepts. The research results revealed that common needs by disability type include restrictions on mobility, problems with information accessibility, difficulties in participating in welfare programs, care burden on guardians, and living in a welfare center. This study, which examined interviews with people with various types of disabilities and their guardians in the local community while opening a welfare center for the disabled, is the first of its kind and is of great significance. We suggest that research be conducted to compare disability types and regions, and that participatory research be conducted to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.
