ABSTRACT

This study explores how dance participation influences the perception of quality of life among visually impaired individuals, analyzed through Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. Six visually impaired dancers from the Luxbit dance company in Seoul participated in this case study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation, and analyzed using inductive categorical analysis. The findings revealed meaningful changes at both the mesosystem and macrosystem levels. At the mesosystem level, participants reported enhanced community spirit, cooperation, sociality, and recognition of the value of helping others. At the macrosystem level, themes included expectations for improved accessibility, enhanced disability awareness, opportunities for broader engagement, and cultural pride through international performances. These results highlight the role of dance not only in fostering individual growth but also in promoting social integration for people with visual impairments. Academically, this study is significant as the first in Korea to examine the lived experiences of visually impaired dancers from an ecological perspective. Practically, it provides implications for developing dance education programs and establishing supportive policies for cultural participation of people with disabilities.
