ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of achievement goal orientation in the psychological pathway from sports participation motivation to achievement behavior among high school Taekwondo athletes. To this end, data from 332 high school Taekwondo athletes nationwide were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), and the significance of the mediating effect was tested via bootstrapping. The main findings are as follows. First, among participation motivation factors, 'skill development and sense of achievement' emerged as the strongest predictor for both task goal orientation (β=.509) and ego goal orientation (β=.508). Second, both task goal orientation (β=.483) and ego goal orientation (β=.194) had a significant positive effect on achievement behavior. Third, a limited direct effect of 'skill development and sense of achievement' (β=.237) was confirmed, and ultimately, achievement goal orientation was verified to significantly mediate the relationship between the two variables. This study holds significance by empirically identifying the mechanism through which an athlete's motivation is expressed as behavior via the cognitive pathway of achievement goal orientation, thereby providing an integrated framework for understanding athlete behavior and offering practical implications for coaching.
