ABSTRACT

Rapid aging in rural areas has significantly escalated the risk of accidents involving mobile ladders and heavy load handling. To address the limitations of existing studies that lack agricultural context, this research conducted a survey and ergonomic posture analysis (RULA and OWAS) on 50 apple farmers in the Gyeongsangbuk-do region. The results showed that 78% of farmers worked on uneven ground, and elderly farmers reported approximately 2.5 times higher pain rates than the control group. RULA analysis indicated a maximum risk score of 7 for heavy lifting. Furthermore, OWAS analysis, conducted to complement RULA, revealed that the whole-body risk reached 'Action Category 4 (Immediate Improvement).' This study quantitatively demonstrated that ladder work imposes critical burdens on both the upper limbs and the entire spine through the complementary application of RULA and OWAS. These findings aim to provide foundational data for establishing customized safety standards for elderly farmers.
