ABSTRACT

Traditional UX guidelines for older adults are based on simplification principles to compensate for physical and cognitive decline, and many companies have developed simplified modes accordingly. This study conducted a usability evaluation of mobile banking tasks with 12 participants of the New Silver generation (aged 62–70, with over 10 years of smartphone experience). The results showed that core principles of existing guidelines—scrolling avoidance and mechanical step separation—actually hindered usability, whereas designs utilizing contemporary UI patterns such as scroll-based architecture, bottom sheets, and layer popups demonstrated superior task efficiency and satisfaction. This indicates that the New Silver generation has sufficiently adapted to mobile interfaces, and that design for older adults should move beyond uniform simplification to reflect digital proficiency. While this study has limitations as exploratory research based on a single task and small sample, it provides practical guidance for New Silver-friendly service design by distinguishing elements to be maintained, discarded, or improved from existing guidelines.
