ABSTRACT

This study compares dark pattern and ethical transparency UX designs to examine their effects on cognitive effort, brand trust, and recommendation intention. While prior research has emphasized the negative impact of dark patterns, direct comparisons with ethical transparency remain limited. To address this gap, an experiment simulating subscription cancellation was conducted with 134 participants, using t-tests and regression analysis. The results show: first, dark pattern conditions elicited higher inducement perception than ethical transparency; second, no significant differences were found in cognitive effort, brand trust, or recommendation intention; third, cognitive effort negatively affected recommendation intention. These findings suggest that UX design outcomes are shaped more by users’ cognitive processes than by design type itself, highlighting the need to balance ethical considerations with efficiency in UX practice.
