ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the mechanism by which economic poverty affects depression among the elderly and to empirically verify the mediating effect of social support. A survey was conducted on 300 elderly individuals aged 60 and older. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 for descriptive statistics, reliability and validity, ANOVA, and correlation analysis. The mediating effect was verified through Baron and Kenny's three-step hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results are as follows. First, lower income was associated with higher subjective economic poverty, weaker social support networks, and higher depression. Second, a significant 'partial mediating effect' was confirmed; economic poverty not only directly aggravated depression but also indirectly amplified it by weakening social support. This study is significant in demonstrating that resource inequality transfers beyond the economic domain into social relationships, threatening the mental health of the elderly. Based on these findings, practical and policy interventions are suggested, including strengthening the public income security system and building emotional support networks based on community care.
