AB - This study aims to explore in depth the job retention experiences of kidney-disabled individuals undergoing hemodialysis and to derive implications for sustaining employment. Seven participants under the age of 65, who were employed and receiving hemodialysis treatment at four artificial kidney centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, were selected for the study. Using a qualitative case study method, the research analyzed the conflicts that emerged in the process of balancing dialysis treatment and work. Through cross-case analysis, 42 meaningful concepts were identified, which were then grouped into 14 subcategories. These subcategories were further abstracted and organized into four overarching categories: (1) conflicts related to workplace recognition and treatment, (2) difficulties in maintaining employment due to balancing work and dialysis, (3) psychological burdens experienced in the process of continuing employment, and (4) the desire for socio-institutional improvements. The findings revealed a range of policy and practical implications for supporting job retention among hemodialysis patients with kidney disabilities, and proposed concrete measures to address the difficulties they face in the workplace.
This study emphasizes that employment-related challenges of kidney-disabled individuals should be recognized not merely as medical concerns but as significant social issues, requiring both policy interventions and greater societal attention.
