ABSTRACT

This study analyzes traditional cultural motifs in Chinese television dramas from a multimedia design perspective and explores their potential for transformation into contemporary visual experiences. Focusing on Story of Story of Yanxi Palace, The Longest Day in Chang’an, The Untamed, and Nirvana in Fire, the study extracts visual elements such as costume, architecture, patterns, and color, and analyzes them using Barthes’ signifier–signified framework and Peirce’s triadic model of icon, index, and symbol. The findings show that traditional cultural motifs function as core semiotic systems that visually convey meanings related to power, order, identity, and emotion. These visual signs go beyond mere mise-en-scène, shaping the narrative and guiding viewers’ sensory interpretation. Moreover, traditional motifs can be expanded into various multimedia formats—posters, UI/UX, and VR/AR experiences—enhancing cultural immersion and emotional engagement. Such applications contribute to the re-contextualization of traditional culture and the creation of affective narratives within contemporary media environments. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that traditional cultural motifs in Chinese dramas can serve as creative design resources that inherit and advance cultural identity.
