Trends and Causes of Xenophobia in Russia

ABSTRACT

Russia is infamous for frequent crimes against foreign residents. Especially, since President Putin came to his office, the xenophobia phenomenon has intensified. This paper examined three factors in the Russian case. The economic factor explains that economic hardship intensifies xenophobia. The demographic factor illustrates that xenophobia can be intensified with increasing foreign nations in the country. The political factor explains that xenophobia is often incited by political elite. The analysis of xenophobia in Russia shows the result that the economic factor, specifically a widening economic gap caused xenophobia in the Russian society. And the xenophobia was utilized by political elite for political purpose.
