ShangHan(傷寒) broadly means all kinds of diseases caused by exogenous pathogenic factors, and narrowly means the exogenous diseases by wind(風) or coldness(寒). After ZhangZhongJing(張仲景) wrote ShangHanZaBingLun(『傷寒雜病論』) in DongHan(東漢) era, so many therapists stated their own viewpoints on ShangHan(傷寒) that it is estimated up to over 530 essays, about ShangHan. ZhangZhongJing's ShangHanZaBingLun truly was embryo of systematic treatment of exogenous factored fever, while the essay was not so perfect in theoretical delicacy, neither kind enough in explaining the insides of diseases, nor clear in locating the symptoms. So it was a little difficult in theoretically relating treatment rule with prescription, and was hard to accomplish perfectly determined treatment. Especially his essay was composed mainly of provisions, which was to be lacked in systematic composition, and naturally was abstruse to general therapists. So even after WangShuHuo(王叔和) arranged his work, it was not well enough to be popular to public, from era of WeiㆍJinㆍNanBeiChao(魏ㆍ晉ㆍ南北朝) to that of SuiㆍTang(隋ㆍ唐). And as we see in WaiTaiMiYao(『外臺秘要)』), he was only to be included in the family of ShangHanBaJia(傷寒八家), the eight prominent therapists in ShangHan, and was not consented as great as he is recognized now. In the sense of medical history, the forming and progress of the knowledge of ShangHanLun run through three steps as following. The first step is the era from WeiㆍJinㆍNanBeiChao to SuiㆍTang, when the original text of ShangHanLun was collected and arranged. The second is the era of SongㆍJinㆍYuan(宋ㆍ金ㆍ元), when the text was variously annotated. The third is the era of MingㆍQing(明ㆍ淸), when the errors on the original text was corrected and many disputes occurred among scholars. Here this writer studied, in the developmental view of point, the process of how ShangHanXue was born and formed, and diversified theoretically as ShangHanLunXue, and how it camp up later. First I studied, the process and characteristic of the time when ShangHanXue formed. And MaiJing(『脈經』) and other sources containing the contents about ShangHanZaBingLun were studied and the contribution of WangShuHuo to ZhangZhongJing's work was lighted up. From the era of DongJinㆍNanBeiChao(東晋ㆍ南北朝) to that of SuiㆍTang, mainly around books like QianJinFang(『千金方』) and WaiTaiMiYao, the viewpoints of many therapists of ShangHan in those days was analysed. The surrounding factors of forming Tang eras text ShangHanLun and KangZhi(『康治』) and KangPing(『康平』) dynastys' texts were investigated, and also GaoJiChong(高繼衝)'s ShangHanLun in LiuChao(六朝) era was studied, all of which helped to search how the original text was conveyed and transformed era to era. In the histoy of oriental medicine, it is no exaggeration that the periodical change in theories and clinic therapics are just the one in the knowledge of ShangHan. In this context, this writer researched in theoretical history of ShangHan, from the ancient ago to SuiㆍTang, and lighted up the developmental tides all over the oriental medicine. Additionally, results of the research into stories about how ShangHanZaBingLun was wandered around and inherited from age to age.
