ABSTRACT

This paper explained Murray Bowen'family therapy and addressed his theory with a Christian view. Family therapy has many contributing authors, but one that is most notable is Murray Bowen. Bowen presented the concepts of self-differentiation, triangulation, fusion, and emotional cutoff. An often-used technique of Bowenian therapy is genograms, which is also used in a less specific way in Structural Therapy. This family mapping provides not only a diagram of family bloodlines, but also includes symbols to indicate present and past relationships between members. Thirty three M. Div. students made their own genograms. This paper studied the M. Div. students'historical and religious family background and diagnosed their families on both sides of selfdifferentiation and triangulation with their genograms, In addition, this paper had a pastoral counseling for the M. Div. students with their genograms. Its result was as follows. Firstly, the students obtained the positive effects of self-counseling on the process of their making and addressing their genograms. Secondly, the students obtained the positive effects of group-counseling through their confessing in a small group. This paper suggested several counseling contents for each M. Div. students.
