ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to develop the competency model required for a Christian counselor to pursue an effective counseling and figure out the essential competency needed to establish his or her identity. Literature research, depth interviews and open questionnaires were conducted. And three competency groups, nine competency components, and forty three competency indexes were constructed by conducting the 3th Delphi method with thirteen experts. As a result of calculating the relative weights (AHP), the competency group showed the order of attitude and qualification, theoretical knowledge, and performance of technical jobs. For the competency components, the group revealed the order of faith attitude and qualification, professional attitude and qualification and self-examination and self-improvement, knowledge of Christian counseling, knowledge of general counseling, knowledge of Christianity, integrated technique of Christian counseling, technique of counseling performance, and technique of advanced counseling. The priority of competency indicators is the love of souls, reliance on God alone, spiritual counselor, sense of calling, wisdom, sense of duty of soul salvation, spiritual training and growth, sacrifice, and endurance. Thirty-four others have been confirmed. As a result, this study shows that it is based on theory and practice in that Christian faith and psychology and integrated application of spiritual competency make counseling effective for counselees and that faith attitude and qualification are the essential competency for Christian counselors to establish their identity.
