ABSTRACT

The main purposes of this study were to investigate the actual status of work-related musculoskeletal pain of Lyamungu local farmers in Tanzania and to investigate the health and socioeconomic variables affecting musculoskeletal pain. IPAID conducted a survey on 150 households from a total of 3600 households in the Lyamungu local area in Tanzania. The 150 respondents (78 male, 72 female) representing each households answered the questionnaires. The results were as follow: 1) Musculoskeletal pain was most common when they performed the kneeling or squatting position and was most frequent in the shoulder. 2) In accordance with domain, significant differences showed between the pain group and non-pain group in some variables. 3) Musculoskeletal pain variables showed significant correlations with agricultural working variables and with health and socio-economic variables. 4) Occurrence of musculoskeletal pain showed significant correlations with major variables such as age, labor intensity, number of workdays, and income. 5) Hours of sleep, income, and medical use (medication) had a significant impact on intensity of musculoskeletal pain. Therefore, musculoskeletal pain of Lyamungu local farmers in Tanzania is considered to have relationships with characteristics of farm working, health and, to some extent, socio-economic status. Plus, environments of agricultural working and health factors are considered as the main factors that could affect the occurrence of musculoskeletal pain in Lyamungu local farmers in Tanzania. In case of assessments of musculoskeletal pain in farmers in underdeveloped countries, characteristics of health and socio-economic factors as well as farm working environment should be considered.
