AB - It has been a problem in the education of children with intellectual disabiltiy that intellectual disability has been understood simply as a thing not a process. This study attempts to analyse intellectual disability from the viewpoint which Vygotsky has developed on the basis of defectology. The study concludes that intellectual disability can be considered as an embodiment of process in which a defect is complemented, not a simple result of biological defect. It also concluded that compensatory reserve and collectivity are important for developing higher psychological functions of children with intellectual disability, and that lower functions become excluded in the complemental process.
