ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to understand and examine the role of disability magazine journalism in the lens of disability paradigm shift from medical model to social model. The 5,717 content lists of "Cowalknews" were examined by basic statistics and contextual analysis methods. The Korean disability magazine has played various roles across time. It mainly focused on the role for educating disability rights and triggering disability movements at the late 1980's, but focused on the role for informing disability benefits, living information, and culture events in 1990's. The role change might be influenced by economic crisis and political issue of publisher. After 2000s, the disability magazine focused on the role of promoting disability awareness again and informing policies and practical strategies for independent living. Generally, the perspective of social model has been dominant in "Cowalknews" for 26 years. On suggests the implications of disability magazine journalism based on the results.
