Aims and Scope

Dear Members,

Since the public release of ChatGPT, the landscape of translation and interpreting has changed at a pace unlike anything we have experienced before. Yet the central mission of Translation Studies—the critical exploration of the relationships among language, culture, and meaning, and the study of human acts of interpretation—remains as important as ever. If anything, the emergence of generative AI calls upon translation scholars to engage in even more sophisticated forms of intellectual reflection. The Korean Association for Translation Studies regards this technological transformation not as a threat, but as an opportunity to expand, renew, and reimagine Translation Studies while further strengthening its scholarly foundations.

The humanities today face significant challenges. A discipline flourishes only when it continues to generate new knowledge and sustain meaningful intellectual exchange. The Korean Association for Translation Studies will continue to promote vibrant academic dialogue through conferences, workshops, and high-quality publications, enabling Translation Studies to respond creatively and critically to the intellectual demands of our time. We will remain closely engaged with developments in Korea and abroad while fostering a sustainable scholarly community that connects researchers across generations, institutions, and areas of expertise.

Our Association also seeks to be an inclusive academic community that welcomes scholars working across diverse languages rather than privileging any single linguistic tradition. Linguistic diversity lies at the heart of Translation Studies. When insights drawn from different languages and cultures are brought into dialogue, our field becomes richer, broader, and more intellectually vibrant. We are committed to providing a forum in which members can exchange ideas openly and inspire one another through genuine scholarly engagement.

We sincerely thank you for your continued interest in and support of the Korean Association for Translation Studies.
