ABSTRACT

This study analyzes specialized public libraries in Korea from the perspective of local revitalization and proposes their typology and operational models. The cases were classified into five types: theme-based, user group-based, function-based, local resource-based, and hybrid specialization. The findings show that specialized public libraries function not merely as libraries with distinctive collections or programs, but as public platforms that connect local memory, culture, everyday issues, local industries, and community networks. Based on the analysis, this study proposes six operational models: the local resource archive model, the cultural creation and experience model, the everyday problem-solving model, the local industry and entrepreneurship support model, the social inclusion and life-cycle support model, and the local collaboration platform model. The study redefines specialized public libraries as strategic public infrastructure for local revitalization.
