ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the literacy education experiences of kindergarten teachers for pre-elementary children through the process of grounded theory to elucidate the patterns of their teaching and learning practices. Additionally, the study explores how early childhood teachers utilize digital media integrated into the kindergarten literacy environment. For this purpose, 15 highly experienced kindergarten teachers were selected through purposeful sampling. Data collected via semi-structured in-depth interviews were analyzed using the grounded theory methodology of Corbin and Strauss (1998). The findings of this study are as follows. First, through open coding, 92 concepts, 37 sub-categories, and 15 categories were identified regarding the teaching and learning practices of early childhood teachers. Second, axial coding was employed to construct a paradigm model concerning the experience of emergent literacy education. Third, during the selective coding process, a narrative outline was developed, and “Teaching and learning practices for emergent literacy education in a digital environment” was derived as the core category. Based on this core category, the patterns of teaching and learning practices implemented by early childhood teachers were classified into two dimensions. The types of emergent literacy teaching and learning practices were identified as ‘experience-oriented,’ ‘literature-oriented,’ ‘play-oriented,’ and ‘activity-linked.’ Furthermore, the strategies for utilizing digital media were analyzed into four types: ‘leading utilization,’ ‘auxiliary tool utilization,’ ‘limited utilization,’ and ‘balanced utilization’.
