ABSTRACT

The study aims to quantitatively examine how public libraries adaptively reused from underutilized spaces contribute to the formation of a place-based collective identity. Built upon the theoretical framework delineated by Park (2020) regarding the advantages of repurposing underutilized spaces, this study adopts place attachment as an operational concept to measure place-based collective identity. A survey was conducted among 183 users of the Gyeongsangnam-do “Sea of Wisdom” libraries, and the gathered data were rigorously analyzed. The major findings indicate the following: First, place attachment was established based on the diversity of user experiences regarding the unique configuration of the underutilized space, transcending the inherent functionalities of standard public libraries. Second, a heightened perception of the public library as a repurposed underutilized space significantly heightened place dependence on the library's traditional functions, such as reading and lending services. Third, when the distance from daily living spaces was minimized, these repurposed libraries routinized community access, which reinforced the irreplaceability of universal functions like rest and relaxation, thereby cultivating place attachment.
