ABSTRACT

‘Vital Creating of tone and atmosphere’(氣韻生動) in Korean Classical Novel Kim, Hyun-Joo Korean Classical Novel and Landscape Painting are very different on the media's character, but they have similar elements on their deep structure. It's mainly because eastern ancient thinking paradigm affect many eastern artistic genres, to some extent because certain principle or convention of Landscape Painting influence on the forming process of Korean Classical Novel. Here we treat Yin-Yang(陰陽)'s paradigm as eastern ancient thinking paradigm, and ‘vital creating of tone and atmosphere(氣韻生動)’ as principle or convention of Landscape Painting. Our focus is on the compositional traces of Korean Classical Novel affected by Yin-Yang's paradigm and ‘vital creating of tone and atmosphere’ of Landscape Painting. Such traces can be seeked at sphere of the binary oppositional concepts like as ‘movement(動)’ and ‘stillness(靜)’, ‘brightness(明)’ and ‘darkness(暗)’, and ‘straight(直)’ and ‘curve(曲)’ which are configurated on Korean Classical Novel. The sphere of ‘movement(動)’ and ‘stillness(靜)’ is embodied by the patternning through crossing over and repetition of 'affair' and 'non-affair', ‘brightness(明)’ and ‘darkness(暗)’ by the control of hero or heroine's live by heavenly order, foreshadowing by dream and prophecy, intercourse between live man and woman's soul etc., and ‘straight(直)’ and ‘curve(曲)’ by crossing over and repetition of ordinary talk and reciting of poems. Thus Korean Classical Novel has a certain sphere which is composed by Yin-Yang(陰陽)'s ancient thinking paradigm and ‘vital creating of tone and atmosphere’ principle of Landscape Painting.
