ABSTRACT

This study aims at analyzing how international student self-determination motivation types differ depending on their academic achievement. Thirty-five international undergraduate learners were divided into groups depending on their academic achievement, and for the higher and lower achiever groups scales items related to self-determination motivation types were further analyzed. Cluster analysis was applied to divide international students into the higher achiever and lower achiever groups. The instrument to measure self-determination motivation was based on Park et al.(2005), which individuates the self-determination motivation types of amotivation, external regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation, integrated regulation, and intrinsic motivation. Results show a difference in self-determination motivation types between the two groups. In particular, amotivation type was meaningfully different. The two groups showed also a meaningful difference on the discrete items included in the amotivation type scale. On the ground of these results this paper outlines different international learner motivational types depending on their achievement, and suggest strategies to foster motivation.
