ABSTRACT

It seems quite natural not to keep much interest towards socialism these twenty years. This phenomena was easily affirmed among the public readers as well as in the concerned researchers. However we could observe a different aspect, at least, as for the French case: several elements are allowing us to recognize it. In France, the divers and scattered archive organizations collecting labor and social movement documents have been federated in the name of CODHOS (Collectif des centres de documentation en histoire ouvrière et sociale). It was founded after the fall of Berlin Wall. In the inner side, such reviews as Cahiers Jaurès or Mil neuf cent(Cahiers Georges Sorel) have merit to be mentioned among other things. They dedicate wholly to socialism despite their small resources. The «Association of Friends of Benoît Malon» created later than those two joined to this currency in the region of Loire Valley. Can we discern a birth of new historiography of socialism thanks to those activities? It is difficult to tell it in a word, but it is clear that they are paying attention to texts. The long term publication of l’Oeuvre de Jaurès or Sorel’s major works, along with other socialist classics demonstrate this tendency. There is also rediscovery of neglected socialists like Charles Andler or Carlo Rosselli. Andler was a renowned Germanist and he looked socialism as a civilization. The Italian socialist Rosselli had struggled to render socialism more responsible during his fight against the Fascist Moussolini regime. Liberal virtues and socialist principles was not separated for the two. Probably such pursuit of history of socialism invites us to evaluate it and read it once more, especially at this time when the vulnerability of actual democracy is commonly, deeply felt.
