ABSTRACT

Pierre Nora’s Les lieux de mmoire undoubtedly occupies a prominent place in French and European historiographies of the last thirty years. Is the notion of ‘lieu de mémoire’ can be exported? Although having no clean answer to this question, Pierre Nora acknowledges that his approach, particularly well suited to the French example, is eventually used in other contexts. Very surprising is fast reception of the notion of ‘lieu de mémoire’ to other European countries such as Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Spain, Austria etc. It can be seen more or less copies in accordance with the original French notion, also uses that go away from it. With these examples always multiplied, we can recognize the fruitfulness of the reception of French paradigm, and also the need to reorient its conceptual patterns to meet the specificities of each country. Extended on the European level, the notion of ‘lieu de mémoire’ is understood in a broad sense, as instruments for writing a national history of symbolic type. Successfully imitated in many European countries, ‘lieu de mémoire’ is thereby to be raised to the transnational and European levels. In time of the European Construction, the adventure of historians continues in search of ‘European lieux de mémoire’.
