ABSTRACT

The outrage of Anagni(September 7, 1303) is an event resulting from two collisions around the imposition and jurisdiction of the cleric between the King of France, Philip IV and the Pope, Boniface VIII. It means the challenge of the power and ideology of the state against the theocracy and the universal power of the pope. During the thirteenth century, French kingship incorporated feudal and decentralized powers for a unitary kingdom. Paradoxically, the cause of this movement was fueled by the papacy, founded on the fragmentation of political powers. The appearance of the integrated state weakened the papal threat of excommunication and the order of Latin Church.
