ABSTRACT

Study on Backgrounds and Connections of Oral Tradition for Dance of Peace of Han Sung-Joon Style Sung Gi-sookLecturer in Sung Kyun Kwan UniversityThe achievements by Han Sung-joon, a father of the modern dance, are really important. Among them, it is the foremost that he created new ground in the traditional dance by staging and reorganizing nation- spread folk dances. Dance of Peace is one of traditional dances created in the courses. Existing views about the origin of Dance of Peace are those from shamanistic dance, court dance and Jaeinchung(the Agency of Entertainment and Performance) in the end of the Choseon Dynasty. These 3 views are mixed and combined in his Dance of Peace. His Dance of Peace, which is included in a vein of traditional dances of Gyonggi style, is handed down in dualization as Gang Sun-young style and Han Young-suk style in the period of his pupils. Dance of Peace, which was a 2-persons dance created under the rule of Japanese imperialism, is now a solo dance. Specially, as Gang Sun-young who received instruction of Dance of Peace at Han Sung-joon?s feet was selected as an intangible cultural asset No.92, she is closer to this dance in tradition. In 1990s, Han Sung-joon - Gang Sun-young?s Dance of Peace holds many pupils and shows quantitative expansion from generation to generation. Specially, it is characterized by a fact that an accompanist of Dance of Peace is selected as the successor, and it is positively evaluated in terms of desirably connecting a vein of complex and unintelligible rhythm of Dance of Peace, which is based on the Gyonggido Exorcism.
