ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research lies in studying the discussion of dance from Michel Foucault’'s thought. This study starts from Michel Foucault’'s thought, focusing on the tone of argument by observes the tendency of the works such as 「Jan Fabre-History of Tears」, 「Hofesh Shechter-Political Mother」, 「Maguy Marin-Groosland」. They are considered to be masterpieces of the dancers mentioned above. From this, it could be concluded that Michel Foucault’ thought lies deeply in the art of dance. Following Foucault’ claim, we regarded Art as the concept of communicating with the society and conducted research on modern dance from the perspectives of body , power through his thought. According to the result of the research, first of all, the present era is the attempt of art to restore the entire grounds and life, and the world is a piece of art; therefore, modern dance has a role of creating the reality through a language or discourse, Second, modern dance needs to have lunacy, free spirit pushed out from the era, and sharply and keenly deny the flow in the body with an unusual and peculiar eye, Third, humans start to dance when wanting to forget about the current bodies, so dance has a creative eye of the difference that challenges the world, Fourth, dance needs to remove the installation of power that boldly approaches for taking a leap of the body, and this truly is the essence of modern dance. Therefore, dance is granted the wider meaning of body from discourse and forms the flow of modern dance which can accept the problems with sexuality and body since the modern age, The thought of Foucault is not entirely about dance, but it can provide motivation to seek the reasons and a critical eye for dance.
