ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the creation of dance work according to utilization of media, feature and changes of acceptance process, focusing on the work classified as the dance form of web dance among recent digital utilization trend of dance. This study is applied with the perspective that perception of dance movement is achieved by ‘interaction’ with audience and physical factor of ‘space and time’ and ‘body’ of dancer. It becomes the framework of analysis discussing perceptual change of recipient and form of arts according to mediality by digital media. As a result of discussing a work, Waterfall through 3 elements of body, time and space, and interaction, it was found out that digital media of web dance originates from the most essential attribute that the work is based on ‘web’, that is,‘it exists in digital information’. That is, dance exists just as virtual existence that is not embodied yet. Information work that can be completed through interaction and selection of audience enables various combinations, modification and expansion by absorbing all substantiality of time/space and dancing body as digit. The body of a dancer in the work Waterfall was fragmentized into ‘image body’ that exists in the media by camera technology and editing. Corporeality carried into image is smoothly modified according to the selection of choreographer and tastes of audience and repeats composition, resulting in existence like one pixel which gradually became estranged from the original version of dancers. In addition,Waterfall that exists in the virtual space of ‘web’ can be given with her own extensity through the screen window. Screen space can have multiple space layer by combination of space frame of various image modules. Waterfall that exists in virtual space as an information can obtain the temporality compressed through loop form as well as the temporality expanded infinitely. The time given in the work is the Abstract modular time premised by choreographer and becomes the time created with interaction with audiences at the same time. Liquidity of time and space as well as body is ultimately completed by interaction with audience. Work Waterfall exists in potential status and cannot guide any explicit results without interaction. Audience is immersed in hypertext work structure dispersively by ‘branching-type interactivity’and interest element presented by game form. ‘This prophecy of composer, R. Wagner, predicting future collective art work and proposing the combination of arts focusing on arts’ leads to Gesamtdatenwerk of the digital times. This Gesamtdatenwerk characterizing participation of recipient in the space constructed by artists as well as construction of new time and space based on virtuality, coincides with the feature of media and art form of web dance discussed through elements of interaction, time and space, and body.
