ABSTRACT

This study focuses on the development of Korean dance movements applying the circular nature from the Yin-yang principles. Eight dance movements have been newly developed to express the harmonious beauty created through the actions and changes in Yin-yang as movements for original Korean dances. The characteristics of these dance movements are analyzed and expressed in diagrams utilizing the Effort theory by Rudolf von Laban. This study is expected to develop new dance movements, to expand the realm of Korean dance, and to present a new direction for choreography. Furthermore, the study is significant as a basic research for the development of dance movements based on oriental philosophy. This study reveals the process for applying the concept of circularity of the Yin-yang principles. Through this precess, to consider the concept of ceaseless production and its practice, this study emphasizes the state of harmony that fundamentally needs to be pursued.
