ABSTRACT

This study applies the concepts of “eventness” and “phenomenological body”, proposed by EricaFisher-Richte in her theory of aesthetics of performance. Using the study concepts it analyzes twoglobally active disabled choreographers’ dances; Jo Bannon’s Exposure (2011) and Chiara Bersani’sGentle Unicorn (2017). In Exposure, Bannon emphasized the eventuality of the performance in a way that explored the multilayeredmeaning of “seeing” on the premise of physical co-presence with the audience, based on hisalbism-related disabilities. Bersani, on the other hand, in Gentle Unicorn, revealed the phenomenologicalspecificity inherent in the disabled body as well as the body’s potential to liberate the existing concept ofdisability.
