ABSTRACT

This study explores the cultural context surrounding the act of exchanging money during the Pumba performances. In this process, laughter, dance, and money will be revealed as a structure of performance that traverses people’s bodies and sustains the space of performance. This study indicates the performance structure of Pumba by focusing on the interaction between laughter, dance, and money, and discusses the meaning of laughter, dance and money in the cultural context of middle-aged Koreans. Through this, it illuminates the identity and value of the Pumba and argues that Pumba is a contemporary performance.
