ABSTRACT

The structural meaning of binary opposition in the essence of Taepyeongmu, which expresses traditional conceptual thinking through the symbols of dance movements, can be summarized as follows. First, the theme that appears in the origin and occurrence of Taepyeongmu is conflict and resolution for the era of peace and prosperity. Second, it is the restraint and splendor that appears shown in the Taepyeongmu dance movements. Third, Taepyeongmu is a binary opposition structure of diachrony and synchronicity that developed from a ceremonial dance to an artistic dance through a modern interpretation of tradition. Fourth, Taepyeongmu also has a binary opposition structure like music. Fifth, there is a conflict between the traditional and modern costumes of Taepyeongmu. In conclusion, Taepyeongmu reflects the values and ideals of traditional society, which are different from existing traditional dances. At the same time, it was recreated in the context of modern society, and the symbolic meaning of binary opposition in the dance was strongly expressed in the overall structure.
