ABSTRACT

This study examines the foundation and direction of the Universal Ballet(UBC) in a political and artistic context and considers the inherent universality of ballet, focusing on its foundation in 1984 and the premiere of Swan Lake in 1992. The rational for UBC’s foundation is that ballet can be a means of “national upliftment” and “world peace,” which reflects artistic, political, and religious desires in the Korean society. Meanwhile, the premiere of Swan Lake was a delicate balancing act between artistic and political fields at the end of the Cold War. UBC takes the universality of ballet as its premise and guiding principle. The universality of ballet helps UBC escape the “West-East” and the “free-communist” divides. Ballet as civilization dissolved the West-East divide, while ballet as classic conjoined the Cold War divide. However, postcolonial discourse reveals that the universality of ballet reinforces Western ballet hegemony by designating national ballet as particularity.
