ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the diverse roles and expressions of villains represented by witches in ballet works based on fairy tales, and to explore the multifaceted meanings embedded within them. Focusing on three well-known fairy tales from Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm—The Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Cinderella—this research seeks to explore the internal roles and external expressions of the grotesque and ugly villains present in these beautiful ballet adaptations. Through this examination, the study highlights the witches, who have been marginalized in ballet research, emphasizing their emergence as significant agents driving the narratives of these works. The research revealed the specific methods and multifaceted meanings of how the dramatic changes in villainy depending on the presence or absence of magical supernatural abilities generate fear and laughter, the core emotions of the grotesque.
