ABSTRACT

In this study, based on the minimalist characteristics of Donald Judd, the minimalist traits in Laura Dean’s work were discussed. To this end, Dean’s works 「Song」, 「Tympani」, and 「Sky Light」 were analyzed based on Judd's core minimalist features, such as “Parsimony,” “Immediacy,” “Spatiality,” and “Wholeness.” The study specifically examined the repetition of movements and musical patterns, the essence of body movements, spatial expansion, and the overall integration of stage production in Dean’s work, connecting them with Judd's minimalist principles. The analysis revealed that Dean's choreography exhibits a distinct minimalist trend. Her works express formal simplicity and directness while also embodying the core features of minimalism, such as repetition and spatial expansion. This study confirms that Dean’s works reflect Judd’s minimalist ideals, highlighting her unique contribution to minimalist dance through simplicity, repetition, and the expansive use of space.
